On Friday in New York, the United Nations launched its 2026 International Women’s Day campaign to address global legal disparities by designating “Rights. Justice. Action.” as the official theme ahead of the March 8 observance. UN data released during the campaign indicate that women worldwide have only 64% of the legal protections afforded to men. According to the March 6 briefing, 54% of nations lack consent-based definitions of rape, and nearly 75% of countries permit child marriage. Official statistics note that 676 million women and girls live within 50 kilometers of active conflict zones where justice systems are largely absent. The announcements precede the 70th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women, scheduled to convene March 9 through March 19 at UN Headquarters. Concurrently, the independent International Women’s Day organization introduced a secondary “Give To Gain” framework that focuses on resource allocation and structural investments. During a March 6 briefing, the UN Secretary-General also confirmed the appointment of Monica Kathina Juma as Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. “We have never been so close to achieving gender equality, and never closer to losing it,” the UN Women Executive Director stated on Friday. “Violence is rising, including online. Backlash is organized and well resourced.”
