Director Patrick Hughes and actor Alan Ritchson confirmed they have fully mapped out a sequel to the sci-fi action film War Machine, following its global release on Netflix on March 6. The project’s development depends on an official studio green light. The announcement establishes immediate expectations for the film’s early viewership metrics on the streaming platform. A swift renewal would guarantee the return of Ritchson’s unnamed protagonist, identified as Staff Sergeant 81, expanding the standalone feature into an ongoing property. During press events ahead of the premiere, Ritchson disclosed that Hughes generated extensive material for future installments, proposing the working title War Machines to parallel the naming convention of the 1986 film Aliens. “Tons. Let me say it for him, tons,” Ritchson said regarding the drafted concepts. “War Machines is going to be sick. The whole thing, we got a whole thing.” Hughes initially wrote the first movie as a closed narrative before developing a larger story arc for the central protagonist. “I fell in love with the character of 81, and the universe of sort of everything he’s going through,” Hughes said. “So look, if that call comes in, then yes, I’m ready to pull the trigger.” The original film follows a U.S. Army Ranger candidate who confronts an extraterrestrial threat during a training exercise. Ritchson declined to reveal his character’s true name, stating that audiences would have to wait for future productions to learn his identity.
