Hawaiian Electric reported over 120,000 customers without power across Oahu, Maui County and Hawaii Island on Friday as a Kona Low storm brought severe thunderstorms and damaging winds that knocked down transmission lines. As of 4 p.m. HST, approximately 121,020 customers lacked electricity, with about 115,300 on Oahu, 4,500 in Maui County and 1,220 on Hawaii Island, according to utility reports. Two key transmission lines serving East Honolulu were damaged, leaving only one operational line. Hawaiian Electric crews are unable to make repairs in dangerous weather conditions, which may delay power restoration. The utility urged customers to prepare for possible overnight or longer outages, especially in areas like Hawaii Kai and East Honolulu where a single remaining line serves the region. “We urge our customers to complete their final preparations, prepare for outages and make safety their highest priority. And we thank our customers in advance for their patience with what we know will be a challenging next several days. Please know that we’ll be out in force as soon as it’s safe to work,” Alberts said. The Kona Low storm is expected to move across the island chain through the weekend, bringing continued hazardous weather. Hawaiian Electric stated it is not activating its Public Safety Power Shutoff program despite false alerts circulating online.
